DETROIT — Common Motors plans to double its hands-free driving community to cowl 400,000 miles within the U.S. and Canada beginning this 12 months.

Tremendous Cruise, GM’s hands-free driver-assist expertise, quickly shall be obtainable on 400,000 miles of interstates and nondivided highways — usually state and federal routes — throughout the U.S. and Canada. That is up from about 200,000 miles of divided highways immediately, GM mentioned in an announcement Wednesday.

The expanded mapping will roll out with Tremendous Cruise-enabled automobiles that come to market within the fourth quarter, and it will likely be delivered through a free over-the-air replace to present Tremendous Cruise clients with a 2021 or 2022 mannequin.

The enlargement will permit clients to drive hands-free alongside interstates and enormous sections of notable routes, comparable to Route 66, stretching 2,400 miles between Chicago and Los Angeles; Route 1, extending 2,370 miles between Key West, Fla., and the Maine-Canada border; California’s Pacific Coast Freeway; and the Trans-Canada Freeway.

With the enlargement, “all of the little townships are going to be linked now,” David Craig, GM’s mapping specialist, advised reporters this week. “That is increasing Tremendous Cruise’s availability to many, many tens of millions extra clients.”
